Interview with The Juan MacLean17 juin | Par Pierre-Alexandre BuissonTags : Tel que vu dans l'infocourriel, Osheaga, Musique, Soirées, DJs, Entrevue Just because he's coming soon to a club near you - in our case, the SAT on June 19th - we had a chat with John MacLean, the brain behind the Juan MacLean project, about various topics, serious or not. Here's the deal on moustaches, New York and guitar solos. The state of the music industry The music industry is in an obvious state of massive transformation. The pandora's box of illegal downloading has been opened, and it can never be shut. Wherever you stand on the the issue, there are pluses and minuses to both sides. For people at the top of the major label game, it means an incredible loss of revenue that has nearly disabled these monolithic corporations. For people like me, at this sort of mid-level place in the industry, it may turn out to be more beneficial than harmful. Though I certainly sell less records (CDs, digital, whatever), way more people actually have my music than they would have if illegal downloading were not in effect. Vocals Vs Instrumentals Instrumentals are fine for 12"'s, but over the course of an entire album they can be quite boring. Artists who have produced some of my all-time favorite 12"'s have failed miserably when they have attempted full length LP's, because it turns out that nobody really wants to listen to an hours worth of instrumental dance music. There are exceptions. The first two Booka Shade LP's work quite nicely. Guitar solos: a disappearing act? My next 12" features some extensive guitar soloing. I did a remix for Mathew Dear on which I played a pretty ridiculous extended guitar solo. The House Of House 12" has a nice guitar solo on it as well. If you were a moustache, what kind would you be? I would be the full bodied Moroder-esque version, as opposed to the neat and trimmed John Waters version. What's your drug of choice? It used to be injecting speedballs, equal parts cocaine and heroin. But that didn't work out so well after a while. Now it is a mixture of Taurine and caffeine. Sometimes the performance is my drug. Why does MacLean persists on living in New York when he's always hangin' out in Montreal? To me, New York is the greatest city in the world. It has everything, the best food, museums, people, etc. I love Montreal too, it has many of the same things as New York, except on a smaller scale of course. I have lived in New York for so long that I don't think I could ever live anywhere else. I walk down the street in my Williamsburg neighborhood and I get free coffee, meals, etc. Most people know me and insist on giving me the royal treatment.
